If you run more than one pub, energy gets complicated fast. Each site can have a different supplier, contract end date, tariff and billing cycle. That makes it easy to miss a renewal and roll onto expensive out-of-contract rates. This guide explains how pub groups can bring energy under control.

## The common problems for pub groups

- **Different end dates.** Contracts renew at different times of year, so someone has to track every one.
- **Out-of-contract sites.** A site that slips through the net can pay far more until it's sorted.
- **Too many bills.** Separate bills from several suppliers take time to check and pay.
- **No clear view of usage.** Without comparing sites side by side, it's hard to spot the one wasting energy.
- **Acquisitions.** Taking on a new pub often means inheriting an unknown contract, or none at all.

## How to manage energy across several pubs

### 1. Build a simple site register

List every site with its supplier, meter numbers (MPAN for electricity, MPRN for gas), tariff, unit rates and contract end date. This alone stops most expensive mistakes.

### 2. Line up your contract end dates

Over time, you can move sites onto contracts that end at the same time. Some suppliers will offer a group contract that brings all sites onto one renewal date, so you can negotiate them together.

### 3. Buy as a group

Suppliers price larger, combined portfolios differently from single sites. Putting several pubs out to tender together can win better rates and terms than renewing each one on its own.

### 4. Choose fixed or flexible

Most small groups suit fixed contracts for budget certainty. Larger groups with high usage can look at flexible contracts, which buy energy in stages. See our guide to [fixed vs flexible energy contracts for pubs](https://utilitiesgroup.co.uk/blog/fixed-vs-flexible-energy-contracts-for-pubs).

### 5. Compare usage between sites

Smart and half-hourly meters let you compare pubs of a similar size. If one pub uses far more than the others, check its cellar cooling, kitchen equipment and heating controls.

### 6. Plan for new sites

When you take on a pub, get the meter readings and supplier details on day one. New occupiers usually start on deemed rates, which are expensive. Get a proper contract in place as soon as you can.

## Don't forget water and waste

The same approach works for water and waste. In England, you can put all your sites with one water retailer and one waste contractor, giving you fewer bills and one point of contact.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I put all my pubs on one energy contract?

Often, yes. Many suppliers offer multi-site or group contracts. Sites with different end dates can usually be brought together over time.

### Do I need a broker for a pub group?

You don't have to use one, but a broker can track every end date, tender your sites together and deal with suppliers for you.
