Cut your business waste costs.

Waste is the contract most businesses never look at. Rolling renewals, oversized bins and collections you no longer need quietly add up — and a lot of firms are paying for a service that stopped matching their site years ago.

Send us a recent waste invoice and we’ll review the bins, the frequency and the price, then compare licensed carriers. You stay compliant, you just pay less.

How much does business waste collection cost?

Most small businesses pay somewhere between a few hundred and a few thousand pounds a year, and the price is driven by three things: how many bins you have, how big they are and how often they are emptied. The waste stream matters too — general waste costs more to dispose of than clean, well-segregated recycling, because general waste carries landfill tax and higher processing costs. Two identical shops on the same street can pay very different amounts simply because one is on a contract that was never reviewed.

What drives the price of a waste contract?

Factor Why it matters
Bin size A 1100 litre bin costs more per lift than a 240 litre bin, but far less per litre — the wrong size either way costs you money
Collection frequency Weekly when fortnightly would do is one of the most common and easiest savings
Waste stream General waste attracts landfill tax and higher gate fees; segregated recycling is usually cheaper
Contamination One wrong item in a recycling bin can see the whole load charged as general waste
Access and location Restricted access, long carry distances or town centre timing windows push prices up
Contract length and renewal terms Rolling contracts with automatic renewal and annual uplifts are where most overpayment hides

Why do so many businesses overpay for waste?

Because waste contracts renew quietly. Unlike energy, there is often no fixed end date staring at you from the bill, so a contract signed years ago keeps rolling with an annual price increase attached. The other common culprits are bins that are too big or too numerous for what the site actually produces, collections that never got reduced after a change in trading hours, and general waste bins full of cardboard that could have been recycled at a lower cost. We have also seen businesses paying for bins that were removed from site years earlier.

Do I have to separate my recycling?

Yes — workplaces in England are now required to separate dry recyclable materials and food waste from general waste, with the smallest businesses given longer to comply. Rules differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Getting the bin mix right is not just about compliance: separating cardboard, glass and food properly usually shrinks the expensive general waste bin, so the compliant setup is often the cheaper one too. If you are unsure whether your current arrangement meets the requirements, send us your invoice and we will look at it with you, and we will always point you to the current official guidance rather than guess.

What is your duty of care?

As a business you are legally responsible for the waste you produce, from the moment it is created until it is properly disposed of. In practice that means using a registered waste carrier, keeping waste transfer notes or the equivalent documentation, storing waste safely so it cannot escape, and being able to show where it ended up. Household bin collections do not cover business waste, and taking commercial waste home or to a household tip is not compliant. Every carrier we recommend is licensed and provides the paperwork you need.

What waste services can we arrange?

Most sites need a mix rather than a single bin. We can put together whichever combination fits:

  • General and mixed waste — the residual bin, kept as small as possible
  • Dry mixed recycling — paper, card, cans and plastics
  • Cardboard — high volumes can sometimes earn a rebate rather than a charge
  • Food waste — essential for kitchens, and now a compliance point for most workplaces
  • Glass — separate collections for pubs, bars and restaurants
  • Hazardous and WEEE — batteries, fluorescent tubes, oils, electrical equipment
  • Clinical and sanitary — care homes, dental and medical premises, washrooms
  • Bulky and one-off clearances — refits, clear-outs and skip or wait-and-load hires

How to reduce your waste costs

  1. Look in the bins. If the general waste bin is full of card and the recycling bin is half empty, you are paying general waste rates for recyclable material.
  2. Right-size before you renegotiate. A smaller bin collected at the same frequency beats a big bin collected half empty.
  3. Check the frequency. Trading patterns change; collection schedules rarely follow.
  4. Count the bins on site. Compare them to the bins on the invoice.
  5. Read the renewal terms. Note the notice period and the annual uplift clause before you sign anything new.
  6. Consider a baler or compactor if you generate high volumes of card or plastic.

How we review your waste

  1. Send us a recent waste invoice and, if you have it, the contract.
  2. We check what you are actually being charged for against what is on site.
  3. We compare licensed carriers covering your postcode and set the options out plainly.
  4. You choose, and we handle the changeover, the bin swaps and the paperwork.
  5. We flag your notice period so the next renewal does not roll over without you noticing.

Frequently asked questions about business waste

Can I use my household bins for business waste?

No. Waste produced by a business is commercial waste and must be collected under a contract with a registered waste carrier, with transfer documentation kept as evidence.

What is a waste transfer note?

It is the record showing what waste left your premises, who took it and where it went. You need to be able to produce it, and your carrier should supply it as standard.

Am I locked into my current waste contract?

Often there is a notice period rather than a hard end date, and many contracts auto-renew. Send us the paperwork and we will tell you when you can move and what notice you need to give.

Will separating waste cost me more?

Usually the opposite. Segregated recycling is generally cheaper to process than general waste, so a compliant bin mix often reduces the total bill even though it means more bins.

Can you help with a one-off clearance or a skip?

Yes. Refits, clear-outs and site clearances can be arranged alongside your regular collections.

Do you charge for a waste review?

No. You pay us nothing directly and we have no volume targets with any carrier, so the recommendation is based on your site rather than on a supplier target.

I have multiple sites. Can you handle them together?

Yes, and multi-site is usually where the biggest inconsistencies show up, with different sites on very different rates for the same service.
