What Is a Letter of Authority (LOA) in Business Energy?

A letter of authority (LOA) is a signed document that lets a broker or consultant speak to your energy supplier on your behalf. It means they can get your usage, contract details and end date without you having to dig out paperwork or sit on hold.

What an LOA lets a broker do

  • Ask your current supplier for your meter details (MPAN and MPRN), usage and unit rates.
  • Find out your contract end date and any notice period.
  • Request quotes from other suppliers using your real usage.
  • Send termination notices or objection queries for you, if you've asked them to.
  • Deal with billing problems and queries on your behalf.

What an LOA doesn't do

  • It doesn't sign you up to a new contract. You still choose and agree any new deal yourself.
  • It doesn't give access to your bank details or let anyone take payments.
  • It doesn't lock you in. You can withdraw it by telling the broker and your supplier.

What's on a letter of authority

  • Your business name, address and company number (if you have one)
  • The sites and meters it covers
  • The broker's name
  • What the broker is allowed to do
  • How long it lasts
  • Your signature and the date

It's usually printed on your company's letterhead or signed electronically.

How long does an LOA last?

Most last 6 to 12 months, but it depends on what's written in the letter. Some suppliers have their own rules on how recent an LOA must be.

Why use one?

  • It saves you time. You don't need to find old bills or call your supplier.
  • The quotes are more accurate. They're based on your actual usage, not estimates.
  • You won't miss your renewal window. The broker can check your end date and notice period.
  • It's ideal for pub groups and multi-site businesses. One LOA can cover every site.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to sign a letter of authority?

Yes, if you read it first and use a broker you trust. Check what it allows and how long it lasts. You can withdraw it at any time.

Does signing an LOA mean I've agreed to switch?

No. It only lets the broker get information and speak to suppliers. You decide whether to accept any new contract.

Can I have LOAs with more than one broker?

Yes, but it can cause confusion with your supplier. It's usually simpler to work with one.
