We also compare Water & Waste — more savings you might be missing. Most businesses focus on energy but overlook water and waste costs. Why churches and charities need the right energy deal

Places of worship and community buildings use energy in a very uneven way, and many end up on the wrong tariff or on expensive out-of-contract rates. We look at how your building is actually used:

  • Heating large, older buildings. High ceilings, stone walls and single glazing make heating the biggest cost, often in short bursts for services and events.
  • Irregular use. Buildings may be busy on Sundays and quiet during the week, which affects which tariff suits you.
  • Halls and community rooms. Hired-out spaces, kitchens and offices add usage at different times.
  • Charity shops and offices. Lighting, heating and tills during opening hours.
  • Contract end dates. Volunteers change and renewal dates get missed, so many buildings roll onto expensive out-of-contract rates. We track your end date for you.

VAT and Climate Change Levy for charities

Some charities and places of worship can pay the reduced 5% VAT rate on energy used for non-business charitable purposes, and may not have to pay the Climate Change Levy on that energy. You usually need to send your supplier a VAT declaration. We can check whether you're paying the right rate.

How churches and charities can cut energy costs

  • Heat the building only when it's in use, using timers or smart controls.
  • Heat smaller spaces, like a side chapel or meeting room, for smaller gatherings.
  • Draught-proof doors and windows where you can.
  • Switch to LED lighting, especially in halls and outside areas.
  • Most importantly, never let your contract roll onto out-of-contract rates. Read our guide to deemed and out-of-contract rates.

Water and waste too

Churches and charities in England can switch business water retailer, and some may be eligible for reduced surface water drainage charges. We also compare waste collection. Ask about these when we call and we'll check them at the same time.

Church and charity energy FAQs

What is an LOA ?

An LOA ( letter of authority ) allows us to find information from your current supplier such as usage and contract end date. If we arrange the switch we can use this to inform the supplier.

Do you arrange the switch of supplier ?

Yes we deal with everything. Once you are happy with your new rates you can sit back and relax and we will take care of the rest.

What support do you offer ?

We don't just arrange the new supply and disappear like some brokers.

If you ever have any queries or questions then we deal with the supplier on your behalf ( no more sitting on hold )

Do you offer any other services ?

Yes- we also work with waste and water suppliers and can help save you money there.

What is the best energy supplier for churches and charities?

There isn't one best supplier for every church or charity. It depends on your usage, meter type, contract end date and VAT status. That's why we compare 15+ suppliers rather than recommending one.

Do charities pay the reduced 5% VAT rate on energy?

Often, yes, for energy used for non-business charitable purposes, such as a place of worship. Energy used for business activities, like a charity shop, is usually charged at 20%. We can help you check your VAT declaration.

Can we switch energy supplier before our contract ends?

Usually you can't leave early without a fee, but you can often lock in a new deal up to 12 months before your end date. Send us your bill and we'll check your dates.

Who should manage our energy contract?

Treasurers and volunteers change, so renewal dates are easy to miss. We keep a record of your contract end date and contact you well before it, so you never roll onto expensive out-of-contract rates.
