  • Heating and hot water. Guest rooms, showers and kitchens need hot water at all hours, often making gas your biggest cost.
  • 24/7 operation. Corridors, reception, lifts and refrigeration never switch off.
  • Kitchens and bars. Breakfast service, restaurants and bars add big peaks.
  • Laundry. Washers, dryers and ironers use a lot of electricity if done on site.

How hotels can cut energy costs

  • Use key-card or occupancy controls so heating and lights switch off in empty rooms.
  • Set heating and hot water to match occupancy, and close off unused floors in quiet months.
  • Insulate hot water cylinders and pipework, and service boilers every year.
  • Switch to LED lighting in rooms, corridors and outside areas.
  • Run laundry outside peak times if you're on a time-of-use tariff.
  • Most importantly, never let your contract roll onto out-of-contract rates. Moving to a competitive fixed deal typically saves 8 to 18%.

An LOA ( letter of authority ) allows us to find information from your current supplier such as usage and contract end date. If we arrange the switch we can use this to inform the supplier.

What is the best energy supplier for hotels?

There isn't one best supplier for every hotel. It depends on your usage, meter type, contract end date and credit position. That's why we compare 15+ suppliers rather than recommending one.

Do B&Bs and guest houses pay business energy rates?

Usually, yes. If your property is run as a business, you'll normally need a business energy contract. If part of the building is your home, it depends on how the supply is set up. We can check this for you.

Can I switch my hotel's energy supplier before my contract ends?

Usually you can't leave early without a fee, but you can often lock in a new deal up to 12 months before your end date. Send us your bill and we'll check your dates.

I've just bought a hotel. What should I do about energy?

Take meter readings on day one and find out who supplies the property. New owners usually start on expensive deemed rates, so get quotes and a proper contract in place as soon as you can.
