What will Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) mean for businesses in 2025?

Here's my summary of the upcoming Market-Wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) and what you should be doing to get ready:

MHHS, rolling out from September 2025, is set to fundamentally change electricity settlement for everyone in the UK—including your business. Every MPAN, regardless of the meter type you have, is moving to half-hourly settlement. This means you’ll benefit from far more accurate consumption data than ever before.

Expect to see updates to billing, contracts, and quotes, as these will now tie directly to that detailed HH data. It’s also worth noting the industry will shift away from the old NHH agents and processes, with new Metering and Data Services taking over. Your supply will now be classified as ‘Smart’, ‘Advanced’, or ‘Unmetered’—it pays to get familiar with the new terms.

From my perspective, the biggest opportunities are for those with smart or advanced meters. Not only will you have access to real-time data (making energy management and cost control a lot smarter), but you’ll also open the door to flexible tariffs and new savings schemes. If you’re still relying on manual reads, now is a great time to upgrade—it’ll save you a lot of hassle down the line, and get you ready for EV, battery, and flexibility market opportunities.

Here’s what I recommend:
- Upgrade to a smart or half-hourly-capable meter ASAP.
- Start reviewing your contracts so you’re not caught out by changes to billing.
- Speak to your suppliers (and us, if you want advice) about what MHHS means for your next set of quotes or renewals—and how you can benefit.
- Finally, keep one eye on Ofgem’s rollout announcements so you can plan your transition smoothly.

The earlier you start, the better positioned you’ll be to take advantage of the changes and avoid disruption as the smart metering mandate deadline approaches.
